Jumping Worms?

I don't have a clue as to what these things are. They're about 3/8 of an inch long and they...jump. They fold themselves in half and then unfold quickly hurling themselves 6 to 12 inches. They are in a flower bed mulched with cocoa bean hulls and I didn't see them until I watered today.

i just saw your site and went out to my garden which also has cocoa mulch. as i went out it started to rain and those lil'buggers started poping out and jumping all over the place. try picking one up and letting it jump from you finger, they jump with quite alot of force for something so small.

Just opened a grapefruit and found a live maggot in it. When I placed the latter on the side of my plate it curled up and jumbed about 20 cm! Watched the process repeat itself 3 times (to persuade myself that I wasn't dreaming!), then googled "jumping maggots" and found your blog. DaveF, Israel.

I live in an apartment above a garage. And when i was sitting on the stairs one day these tiny white worms fell on me so i looked around and saw millions of them all over the stairs. They look just like yours but smaller. There has only been one the size of yours. But mine are not in a garden they are falling out of a tree and there is no cocoa mulch around here. Do you think that mine are the same bugs as yours?
